Useful Information - Parking, Tickets, Etc. Dear Congregant or Guest,
We are pleased that you will join us for the upcoming High Holydays. We hope that our services will provide you with an opportunity for meaningful prayer, reflection, and a sense of community. On behalf of the Temple Sinai family, we wish you a happy New Year.
Location of Services
Our High Holyday services are held at more than one location: the Paramount Theater, the Temple Sinai Sanctuary, and at Dimond Park. The Break-the-Fast will take place in Stern Hall. Please click here for maps and directions.
Parking around the Temple Sinai Sanctuary (NEW! Please Read our Important Information)
· Street Parking: We are sorry to report that, after lengthy discussion or attempts to negotiate, this year the City of Oakland Parking Enforcement Office will NOT be able to relax parking enforcement around the Temple during our services. Please be advised that if you park on the street you must obey all regular parking regulations and meters. Please pay attention to parking signs regarding meter times, loading zones, street cleaning, etc. Please note that the city has increased meter hours until 8pm. Any parking tickets issued are solely the attendee's responsibility.
Parking around the Paramount Theatre (NEW!)
· There are several parking lots around the Paramount Theatre. Please see the enclosed map and directions. Lots may fill quickly on weekdays so please arrive with time to spare.
· The City of Oakland does allow parking lot operators to charge “event rates” for those attending services (technically an “event” at the Paramount Theatre) even though other cars parking at the same time may be charged a lower “regular daytime business rate”.
Tickets
Tickets are required for Erev Rosh HaShana, Rosh HaShana morning, Erev Yom Kippur, and Yom Kippur morning. Tickets are not required for other services. Each person, including children in fourth grade and above, will be asked to show his/her ticket at the door. If you forget your ticket or any other problems arise, please go to the will call desk at the entrance. Tickets are non-transferable. Additional tickets can be requested/purchased by calling the office at (510) 451-3263 or at www.oaklandsinai.org.
Seating
Except for a few seats reserved for people with special needs, there are no reserved seats. Congregants and guests are encouraged to be in their seats before the start of the service. Doors open one hour before each service. Please allow extra time for ushers to view your High Holyday tickets, to pick up your prayer book, etc. Ushers are also available to assist anyone with special needs or circumstances.
Public transportation near the Paramount
If possible, the use of public transportation is encouraged. The 19th street BART station is half a block from the Paramount and 8 blocks from the Sanctuary. Buses #40, #43, and #51 pass by the Paramount.
Noise level
As a courtesy to those conducting the service and to others around you, please do not congregate near the entrance doors of the sanctuary or theater. Sound carries inside and is very distracting to those praying. If you have a child that needs attention during services (crying, diapers, snacks, a little exercise, etc.), please go out to the lobby far enough away from the doors so that the noise cannot carry inside.
Cell Phones/pagers
Before entering the Paramount Theatre or Temple Sinai Sanctuary, please silence cell phones.
Childcare (4 months–5 years) and a Children’s Program (K-3rd grade)
are available during the morning services on both Rosh HaShana and the Yom Kippur at both the Paramount and the Temple Sinai Sanctuary. To secure adequate staffing, pre-registration is required so please contact the Temple (or click here) by August 27 to register. The afternoon children’s services are held at the Temple Sanctuary at 1:30pm and do not require tickets or registration.
Prayer Books and Prayer Shawls (Tallitot)
Tallitot will be distributed in the lobby of the Paramount and entrance way of our sanctuary. If possible, please return these items to the lobby at the end of the service. Your cooperation is appreciated.
The Book of Remembrance
Lists names of loved ones who have passed away and is distributed at the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. If a name is not listed on our Wall of Remembrance or Tree of Life then it must be resubmitted each year. Please contact the Temple office by August 27 to have a name listed.
Scented Products
Several of our congregants and guests have environmental sensitivities or allergies to airborne chemically scented products. These people may experience reactions such as sneezing, migraines, coughing, or even sudden difficulty breathing with asthma-like symptoms. Cozy seating, enclosed spaces, and the length of services all factor into making High Holydays a difficult environment for someone with these sensitivities if people wear colognes, after-shave, cosmetics, or scented body products. Please help us to keep our services accessible for all by reducing or by refraining from wearing chemically scented products to services.
Taschlich
This late afternoon Rosh HaShana service includes a ceremonial “casting away of one’s transgressions and past bad habits” and is held outdoors on Thursday, September 9 at 5:45pm at Dimond Park.
Shana Tova. We look forward to celebrating the High Holydays with you.
