Adult Hebrew Classes

Total Beginners Hebrew Class — Introduction to Basic Decoding (Class H)  
Mondays
 weekly, 6:30pmClass begins October 28. 
Students learn the alphabet and vowels, blending, and introductory vocabulary and features of the Hebrew language. A great deal of class time is spent practicing  decoding and developing confidence with word attack skills. Basic blessings.

Beginning Prayerbook for Hebrew Readers (Class G)
Wednesdays weekly, 6:30
pm. Class begins October 30. 
New students welcome but not for total beginners. This class is for those who can minimally decode Hebrew. We do a lot of reading review, have learned the basic holiday and Shabbat blessings, and will begin a study of the prayer service: its structure, and the meaning of the prayers. Those who wish to learn the chants will have an opportunity to do so. Course will focus on the first rubric of the Shabbat service, the Shema and Its Blessings. 

Modern Conversational Hebrew (Class F)
Tuesdays weekly, 5:00pm. Class is ongoing. New trimester begins October 29.
 
New students welcome and may join anytime. Registration will be prorated. 

Students should be able to read simple Hebrew text/stories for meaning. Conversation focuses on stories, students' daily lives, families, and a bit of news. Includes practical grammar

Intro to Judaism

Temple Sinai in Oakland and Congregation Beth El in Berkeley are joining together to offer Introduction to Judaism beginning in October 2024. Learn with Beth El and Sinai clergy about the rituals, holidays, beliefs, big questions, and complexities of Judaism in a welcoming and communal environment. This class is open to all - the Jewish adult who wishes to discover or deepen Jewish knowledge, non-Jews with a Jewish partner or just curious to learn more about Judaism, or those considering choosing Judaism. Second semester dates will be shared soon and will take place on Thursday evenings at Beth El beginning in mid-February.
