“The Invention of Reform Judaism:  Abraham Geiger and His Times”: Geoffrey Piller
Sundays, March 27, April 3, 10, 17, and possibly 24
10:00 – 11:30am, Zoom

While in its long history Judaism has faced huge challenges, perhaps the biggest — and certainly the most relevant to Jewish life today — was whether Judaism would survive after the nations of Western and Central Europe emancipated their Jews in the first half of the 19th Century. The Jewish community had to answer questions like ‘How to live a Jewish life in the modern world?’ and, more importantly, ‘Can I still be a Jew and live in the modern world?’ This 4 (5?) week course will try to address how Judaism was reinvented, what brought that process about, and its lasting impact on Judaism today.
