Israel Constitutional Crisis — Judicial Reform or a Regime Change?

The presentation will focus on the proposed government changes to Israel’s legal system and the danger they pose to Israeli democracy. After a brief review of the unique constitutional and legal situation in Israel, we will explain the details of the suggested amendments of the judicial reform. We will also look at why the protest movement has adopted the Israel Declaration of Independence as its banner.
Professor Michal Tamir is a Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies visiting Professor at UC Berkeley. In Israel she is an Associate Professor at the Academic Center of Law and Science and an Adjunct Professor in Bar-Ilan University and in Tel-Aviv University. She is the former president of the Israeli Law and Society Association and a former visiting professor in NYU. Prof. Tamir’s research and teaching topic is public law in the broad meaning: Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Criminal, Procedure Law with a focus on human and civil rights.
