Life in Chaos: Working with Refugees: with Lexine Alpert—Zoom
Thursday, August 24, 2023 • 7 Elul 5783
7:00 PM - 8:30 PMZoomSocial Action presents "Life in Chaos: Working with Refugees" with Lexine Alpert
Lexine Alpert, a retired Kaiser social worker and photojournalist has spent the last five years volunteering with refugees at Moria Camp on the island of Lesvos and in Athens working with some of the more than one million refugees and migrants who have crossed the Mediterranean to land in Greece. Many are fleeing the violence of armed conflict in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, and Cameroon. Others are fleeing famine and other consequences of the climate crisis. Her work has focused on working with unaccompanied minors: children who have arrived without their parents. When she is in Oakland, Lexine loads up her car with meals from the First Presbyterian/Sinai Monday lunch program and delivers them directly to unhoused individuals on the streets. Join us to hear her experiences and learn why she is eager to return.
