Wednesday, January 24, 2024 14 Sh'vat 5784

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMAlbers Chapel

Want to learn more about criminal justice reentry work taking place in Temple Sinai’s backyard? Join us on Wednesday, January 24th at 7:00pm as the Executive Director of Bonafide speaks to our community about life following incarceration.

Bonafide is an Oakland-based nonprofit focused on ensuring people affected by incarceration have the material, emotional and advocacy support they need to both integrate into society and build healthy, productive lives going forward. On January 24th from 7:00 – 8:30pm in Albers Chapel, our Temple’s new Criminal Justice Workgroup will sponsor an event spotlighting Bonafide, as their Founder and Executive Director, David Cowan, discusses three major efforts to support individuals returning to the community following their release: prison gate pick-ups, critical adventures and peer coaching.

Anchored in one of our core Jewish values, teshuvah, the welcoming back to our community of those who may have strayed, David and his panelists will share more about their personal stories, how critical Bonafide was to their first 30 days following their release from incarceration, and how Bonafide came to be in 2016. David was an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist in the U.S. Air Force, and earned his A.A. from Patten University while at San Quentin. He continued his education at San Francisco State University, earning his B.A. in Criminal Justice Studies in 2017. David is the 2019 recipient of UnCommon Law’s “Uncommon Hero’s Award” and has been a leader in the criminal justice space since his release from prison in 2011.

Please RSVP for the event here, and reach out to us at sinaisocialaction@oaklandsinai.org for more information about our Temple’s Criminal Justice Workgroup!
