How and Why Did Reform Judaism Come into Existence?
Adult Education Class, Thursday Nights, 7:00pm, Starting October 20
Nothing in our long history (or more consequential for Judaism) is quite like what happened in the first half of the 19th Century. Europe’s Jews were being emancipated from a thousand years of ghettoization and Judaism was compelled – suddenly and with great force — to reconcile with modernity. This course starts with what Jews were being emancipated from and then asks why, where, and how Reform Judaism emerged from that struggle, focusing on Abraham Geiger, the leading voice of Reform.
