Tuesday, September 17, 2024 • 14 Elul 5784
7:00 PM - 8:30 PMAlbers ChapelClimate Tzedek Steering Committee presents the film “Toxic Tour” by Communities for a Better Environment (CBE), followed by a discussion on actions congregants can take regarding the proposed expansion and modernization of Oakland Airport. This film and these topics address climate justice issues in our community, which are deeply connected to Jewish values.
CBE’s mission is to empower California’s communities of color and low-income communities to achieve environmental health and justice by preventing and reducing pollution and building green, healthy, and sustainable environments. CBE provides residents in heavily polluted urban areas with organizational skills, leadership training, and legal, scientific, and technical assistance to confront threats to their health and well-being successfully.
“Toxic Tour” tells the story of community resistance against environmental injustice in East Oakland. Since World War II, East Oakland has been heavily burdened by air pollution from the rapid expansion of industry, freeways, and the Port of Oakland. Industrial facilities in the area discharge pollutants linked to asthma, birth defects, and cancer. Residents continue to fight to hold industry and government officials accountable for the toxic pollution in their neighborhoods.
The Port of Oakland plans to add sixteen (16) new passenger gates to the Oakland Airport. This proposed expansion contradicts California’s efforts to combat the climate crisis and poses significant health threats and quality of life issues for East Oakland residents. We will discuss the airport expansion’s impact on air pollution, noise pollution, traffic congestion, and global warming. Additionally, we will explore actionable steps you can take. The fate of your community’s health is in your hands.
