AGING IN PLACE? with Barbara de Vries

Picture yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 15 years. What is the place where you want to be living?

Surveys show that most older adults want to stay in their own homes as long as possible. However despite having strong desire to ‘age in place’ many of us also experience denial, overwhelm, fear and inertia which prevent us from taking next steps.

This event is an opportunity for participants to begin to investigate our values and needs for home and community as we age. It also allows exploration of the barriers which hold us back from making appropriate and timely living choices.

The session will begin with introductory comments by Barbara DeVries based on her years of experience helping seniors in transition. Following Barbara’s talk participants will be invited to join small breakout groups to discuss their own wishes, ideas and concerns about aging in place. In conclusion we will reconvene with the larger group for questions and sharing.

Barbara de Vries has an MPA degree from Harvard University. She also holds an MSW from the University of Michigan and for 15 years ran a Senior Outreach Program and a Day Treatment Program for the mentally ill for Alameda County.

For the last thirty two years Barbara has been the owner of Life Management Associates, a private fiduciary business providing care management and financial management for seniors and dependent adults.

Barbara has been a Governor Brown appointee to the Professional Fiduciary Bureau and past president of her professional association. She taught a Conservator course to non-professional appointees at the SF Probate Court and runs a monthly mentorship program for practicing fiduciaries.

She loves adventure travel and her new love is playing Mah-jongg.
